Vijay Patkar was born on 29 May 1963 in the Girgaon neighbourhood of Mumbai. He grew up and was educated in the city, attending Union High School before earning a graduate degree from Siddharth College, Mumbai. From an early age he participated in college theatre; his first stage appearance was in a play titled Majhi Pehli Chori.
