Vijay Rupani Biography

Vijay Ramniklal Rupani was an Indian politician from Gujarat who served as the state's 16th Chief Minister. A longtime member of the Bharatiya Janata Party

Early life and background

Vijay Ramniklal Rupani was born on 2 August 1956 in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar). His family relocated to Rajkot in 1960 amid political instability in Burma. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Dharmendrasinhji Arts College, Rajkot, and went on to earn an LLB from Saurashtra University.

Rupani belonged to a Jain Bania family. His parents were Ramniklal and Mayaben Rupani, and he had six siblings. Before entering full-time politics he was involved in the family trading business, Rasiklal & Sons, and also worked as a stockbroker.

Career

Rupani’s political activity began as a student activist with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. He formally joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Jana Sangh in 1971. During the Emergency he spent 11 months in jail in 1976. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he worked as an RSS pracharak.

He served in local government in Rajkot, including a term as corporator and later as Mayor. Over time he moved into state and national roles: he chaired the Gujarat Tourism board, served as chairman of the Gujarat Finance Board, and acted as general secretary of the BJP’s Gujarat unit. He was also appointed chairman of the manifesto committee during Keshubhai Patel’s tenure.

Rupani served in the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. After Vajubhai Vala vacated the Rajkot West assembly seat in 2014, Rupani was nominated by the BJP and won the by-election on 9 October 2014. He became Gujarat BJP President on 19 February 2016 and held that post until August 2016. On 7 August 2016 he was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat. He retained the chief ministership after winning the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election from Rajkot West. On 12 September 2021 he resigned as Chief Minister.

In state government he held cabinet responsibilities that included transport, water supply, labour and employment during Anandiben Patel’s administration. He was the only cabinet minister in the 2016 Gujarat cabinet who had been jailed during the Emergency.

Public profile

Rupani was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and had long-standing ties to the RSS. He was married to Anjali, who was active in the BJP women’s wing. The couple had children: a son, Rushabh, and a daughter, Radhika Rupani. Another son, Pujit, died in an accident; Rupani later founded the Pujit Rupani Memorial Trust in his memory.

He stood approximately 168 cm tall and had black hair and black eyes. His hobbies included reading and travelling. Politically, he counted Narendra Modi among his notable contemporaries.

Controversies and other notes

The available information records regulatory action involving the Vijay Rupani HUF: in 2011 the Securities and Exchange Board of India charged the HUF in relation to manipulative trades, and in November 2017 SEBI issued an ex parte order that imposed a penalty of ₹1,500,000 on the HUF for creating a misleading appearance in certain stocks.

Latest updates

On 12 June 2025 Vijay Rupani was aboard an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London that crashed shortly after takeoff. The flight carried 242 passengers. Authorities declared him dead on the same date. He was travelling to visit his daughter Radhika. At the time of his death he was 68 years old.
