Early life and background

Vijay Basavanneppa Sankeshwar was born on 2 August 1950 in Gadag-Betageri (then in Mysore state, now Karnataka). He grew up in a large family as the fourth of seven children. His father, Basavanneppa Sankeshwar, was a businessman who handed the family printing press to Vijay when he was a teenager. Vijay completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree and later moved with his family to Hubballi, Karnataka, as he expanded his business interests.

Career

Sankeshwar began his entrepreneurial journey in his mid-teens when he took over the modest family printing press and invested in modern machinery to grow the business. In the 1970s he diversified into transport, founding Vijayanand Roadlines in 1976. He started that transport venture with a single truck bought on bank finance and gradually expanded the fleet and operations; by 1990 Vijayanand Roadways reportedly operated more than a hundred vehicles and was generating significant profits.

Over time his transport activities evolved into a wider logistics enterprise. He is best known as the founder of VRL Logistics Limited, a company that grew from those early transport interests. VRL’s business scale is reflected in later financial reporting: a 2022 press report cited an annual profit figure for the company.

Sankeshwar also diversified into energy and media. In 2006 he entered renewable energy with a wind power project in Gadag district. In the media sector he launched multiple Kannada newspapers and periodicals, including Vijay Karnataka and Vijaya Vani; the latter, founded in 2012, is described as a leading Kannada daily. He later established Sahitya Prakashana, an online bookstore, in 2020.
