His father, Chandrakant Gokhale, worked as an actor and singer. Gokhale’s upbringing in this artistic milieu shaped his future career in theatre and film.
Career
Vikram Gokhale built a long and varied career as an actor and director across Marathi theatre, Marathi and Hindi films, and television. He began on the stage, performing in numerous Marathi plays and gaining recognition for his theatrical work. His film acting career included early appearances in regional cinema; his first Hindi film role was in Parwana (1971), and he made his Marathi film debut with Varhadi Ani Vajantri (1973). He later acted in Gujarati and Tamil films as well.
In Hindi cinema, he became widely known for character roles in notable films such as Agneepath (1990), Khuda Gawah (1992), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), and De Dana Dan (2009). His later Hindi films included Aiyaary (2018) and Bang Bang! (2014). His final film role was in the Hindi film Nikamma (2022), in which he played a retired major.
On television, Gokhale appeared in both Marathi and Hindi serials. In 1983 he acted alongside his wife in the Marathi serial Shwetambara on Doordarshan Sahyadri. He played Akbar in the 1990 Zee TV series Akbar Birbal and appeared in a range of shows over the decades, including Natkhat Narad (1985), Udaan (1989), Virrudh: Har Rishta Ek Kurukshetra (2007), and Tuzech Mi Geet Gaat Aahe (2022), among others.
As a director, he worked in Marathi film and television, directing the Marathi film Aaghaat (2010) and the TV show Avartan (2017). He also ran a performing arts school in Pune, the Vikram Gokhale Acting Academy, reflecting his ongoing commitment to theatre and actor training.
