Early life and background

Vikram Prabhu was born on 15 January 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family with deep roots in Tamil cinema: his father is actor and producer Prabhu Ganesan and his grandfather is the celebrated actor Sivaji Ganesan. His mother is Punitha, and he has a sister, Aishwarya Prabhu.

After completing his school education Vikram pursued higher studies and earned an MBA in San Diego, United States. Following his time abroad he returned to Chennai and became involved with his family’s production activities, assisting with work at Sivaji Productions during the making of the film Chandramukhi in 2005.

Career

Vikram Prabhu debuted as a lead actor in 2012 with Kumki, directed by Prabhu Solomon. For the role of Bomman, a mahout, he trained to work closely with elephants and spent time at an elephant camp to prepare for the part. Kumki was released in December 2012 and met with commercial success and positive attention for Vikram’s performance, earning him several debut awards.

In the same period he began work on a remake titled Sattam Oru Iruttarai. Production delays and commitments to completing Kumki’s climax meant he did not remain with the project, which later cast another actor in his place.

Vikram continued to build his filmography with a string of roles across genres. In 2013 he appeared in the action thriller Ivan Veramathiri, playing a student; critics highlighted his convincing portrayal in action sequences. The following year he featured in the action thriller Arima Nambi and later in Sigaram Thodu, a family action entertainer in which he appeared in two different looks. 2014 also saw him in the commercially successful Vellaikaara Durai released on 25 December.

In 2015 he starred in the romantic comedy Idhu Enna Maayam directed by A. L. Vijay, where reviews noted his performance positively even as his casting as a college student drew mixed reactions. In July 2016 Vikram launched his own production company called First Artist and that year acted in Wagah; reviewers commented on the intensity of his performance. He also appeared in Veera Sivaji in 2016.

Vikram’s 2017 release Sathriyan, a gangster thriller, expanded his popularity and drew praise for his embodiment of the angry-young-man type of role. That year he made his producing debut under First Artist with the film Neruppu Da. In 2018 he took on a comedy dual role in Pakka and also acted in 60 Vayadu Maaniram and the action thriller Thuppakki Munai.

In 2020 he worked on Vaanam Kottatum, directed by Dhana Sekaran and co-written and co-produced by Mani Ratnam; the film featured veteran actors R. Sarathkumar and Raadhika. The same year his heist thriller Asuraguru underperformed commercially.
