Early life and background

Vikramaditya Motwane was born on 6 December 1976 in Mumbai and grew up in the city he still calls home. He spent his school years at Jamnabai Narsee School. His family background combines Sindhi and Bengali origins. His mother, Dipa De Motwane, worked in film production and became an early influence on his interest in cinema; she took roles in production when he was a child, and Motwane helped her with research for a television talk show as a teenager.

Motwane’s parents separated when he was ten. As a teenager he encountered people who would later shape his career: he first met Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a talk-show set where Bhansali was working as an assistant director. By his late teens Motwane was assisting on the same show for several years before moving into the film world as an assistant director.

Career

Motwane began his film career working under Sanjay Leela Bhansali, serving as an assistant director on major productions including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. He later collaborated with Anurag Kashyap in various capacities, including choreography on Kashyap’s Paanch. Early in his career he also worked for modest pay as an assistant director while learning the craft.

His feature directorial debut, Udaan, was released in 2010 after a long gestation period. The project took years to get off the ground until Anurag Kashyap agreed to produce; principal photography was completed in just 42 days. Udaan brought Motwane to international attention when it became the first Indian film in 16 years to be selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.

Motwane has directed and produced a range of films across genres. As a writer, one of his early credits is the 2007 film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. He produced Lootera in 2013 and directed the survival drama Trapped in 2016, which won critical recognition. Alongside peers he helped establish Phantom Films in 2011 with Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Madhu Mantena; the company positioned itself as a content-driven production house and produced several notable films including Queen, Hasee Toh Phasee, NH10, Hunterrr, and Udta Punjab. Phantom Films received a National Award for Queen.

Motwane was an early mover into streaming-era storytelling. He co-directed the first season of the Netflix original series Sacred Games, sharing directorial duties with Anurag Kashyap; Motwane directed the sequences involving Saif Ali Khan while Kashyap handled those with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Sacred Games led to further work with streaming platforms: Motwane served as executive producer on the Netflix original Ghoul, and in 2019 he took on the role of showrunner and creative lead for Sacred Games season two, with Neeraj Ghaywan stepping in to direct portions of the second season.

Motwane’s films have earned several industry awards. Udaan brought multiple honours in 2011 including a Zee Cine Award for Best Director and several Filmfare awards for categories such as Best Film, Best Story (shared with Anurag Kashyap), and Best Screenplay. Films associated with Motwane and Phantom Films have been recognised at awards ceremonies over the years, including Stardust and IIFA awards for Queen, and international festival recognition for Trapped. In 2018 Sacred Games won an Indian Television Academy Award for Best Web Series, and in 2023 Motwane received a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Director – Drama Series for Jubilee.

Motwane is regarded as a private individual who keeps a low public profile despite his industry success. He married Ishika Mohan, a photographer and actor whom he met in school, in 2005. Ishika has appeared in his work, including a role in Udaan. The couple have a daughter named Akira.
