Vinai Kumar Saxena Biography

Vinai Kumar Saxena is an Indian businessman and public figure known for his work in industry, water-security projects and public life. Born in Kanpur in 23

Early life and background

Vinai Kumar Saxena was born on 23 March 1958 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family described as educated and respected in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, and spent his early schooling years in the region. While studying at Mardhan Singh Inter College in Talbehat, Lalitpur, he founded a student union in 1975 and served as its general secretary, an early sign of his interest in organisational activity and public engagement.

He later attended Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur. Saxena holds a pilot licence and is listed as having black eyes and a bald head. His height is recorded as approximately 5'6" (168 cm).

Career

Saxena entered the corporate world in 1983 with J.K. Group of Companies, starting as an Assistant Officer at the group’s operations in Rajasthan. Over the next decade he worked in different capacities at the company’s white cement plant and rose through the ranks to be named General Manager in 1995.

During his tenure with the JK Group, Saxena was entrusted with oversight of a proposed port project in Gujarat and went on to serve as CEO and Director for the Dholera Port Project. He was also given responsibility for the construction of a concrete gravity dam associated with the Sardar Sarovar Project, under Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited.

In 1991 he founded the National Council for Civil Liberties of India (NCCL), an NGO that was headquartered in Ahmedabad. His public-spirited work extended into environmental and water-security areas: in July 2009 he received recognition for efforts addressing fresh-water scarcity in Gujarat’s Coastal Bhal region, a project that led to an invitation from UNESCO to participate in a workshop on wise coastal practices for sustainable human development.

Public profile

Saxena has been an active public figure both through his NGO work and later through roles in business and civic causes. In 2008 he pursued a public complaint after observing the placement of a Mahatma Gandhi figure at Madame Tussauds in London; his letter prompted museum officials to relocate the statue to the section devoted to world leaders and to apologise for the original placement.

His public life has at times intersected with legal proceedings. A defamation case filed in 2001, when he was president of the NCCL, concerned comments made during a press conference about an advertisement related to the Narmada Bachao Andolan. On 1 July 2024 the Saket Court in Delhi delivered a sentence in that case, awarding five months’ imprisonment and ordering compensation of Rs. 10 lakh in favour of Saxena.

Latest updates

As of 2024, Saxena is 66 years old. His career spans industry leadership roles, NGO work on civil liberties and water security, and involvement in public controversies that have received judicial attention.
