Early life and background

Vinay Tevathia was born on 5 July 1999 in Kair, Najafgarh, Delhi. Raised in Najafgarh, he developed an interest in sport during his school years and began practicing kabaddi at a young age. While in eighth grade he spent time at a local stadium where senior players and coaches helped shape his early development.

As he continued his education, Vinay enrolled at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Haryana, where he became an important member of the university kabaddi team. His university career included notable performances at national-level competitions, most prominently the All India Inter-University Kabaddi Championship 2019–20 in Mangalore. There he served as his side’s main raider, finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 54 raid points, and helped his team to the title.

Career

Vinay’s progression from university competitions to the professional ranks came through the Pro Kabaddi League’s New Young Player program. After performing well at trials and attending the Haryana Steelers’ training camp, he was absorbed into the team and made his PKL debut in season 7 (2019).

He entered the PKL after being purchased by the Haryana Steelers at the 2019 auction for Rs 7.26 lakh. His first match for the franchise came against Puneri Paltan on 22 July 2019 in Hyderabad. Across that debut season he was a regular presence, appearing in all 23 matches and finishing with 125 raid points. Those returns placed him among the league’s top raiders that year and included six Super raids, three Super 10s, and four tackle points.

Haryana retained Vinay for season 8, securing his services for Rs 25 lakh. In that campaign he played 15 matches and produced 51 raid points from 96 raids. The franchise again acquired him ahead of season 9 in 2022 for Rs 25 lakh, during which he took part in 15 matches, attempted 53 raids and scored 33 raid points.

Vinay remained part of the Haryana Steelers' plans into PKL season 10 in 2023 when the team retained him once more. In conversations with teammates, he has identified Manjeet Dahiya as his favourite raider within the squad and named Jaideep Dahiya and Mohit Nandal among his preferred defenders.
