His father, Shreedhar Ramchandra Tawde, was associated with the RSS, and his mother, Vijaya Tawde, is a homemaker.

Career

Tawde's political involvement began in student politics. In 1980 he joined the ABVP and later served as its Secretary-General in 1988 and as National Secretary in 1993. He formally entered the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1995 as a party general secretary in Maharashtra.

Over the next two decades Tawde rose through organisational ranks and elected office. In 1999 he became president of the BJP's Mumbai Metropolitan Region and retained a leadership role in the city for many years. He won election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2008 and in 2011 served as leader of the opposition in that chamber during Prithviraj Chavan’s government.

In 2014 Tawde contested and won the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly seat from Borivali, securing victory by a significant margin. When Devendra Fadnavis formed the state cabinet that year, Tawde was appointed as a minister with responsibilities that included School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Marathi Language, Cultural Affairs and Sports. His ministerial tenure included initiatives such as establishing the Maharashtra International Education Board, advancing a Human Organ Transplantation Act at the state level, and launching the Pustakanch Gaav initiative, which turned Bhilar in Satara district into a village dedicated to books.

Following his tenure in state government, Tawde continued to hold organisational posts in the BJP. He was appointed National Secretary of the party in 2019 and later served as General Secretary under party president J.P. Nadda.

Public profile

Tawde is known within political circles for a mix of organisational work, legislative scrutiny and public-facing initiatives. He presented documentary material and pushed for investigations into alleged irregularities in irrigation spending in Maharashtra, which contributed to the formation of an inquiry committee chaired by Madhavrao Chitale. Controversies

Tawde's career has involved public controversies that have attracted media attention. Questions were raised about the recognition status of Sant Dnyaneshwar University and the validity of degrees it conferred; opponents asked for his resignation in 2015 over that issue, and Tawde responded by saying he had disclosed the matter in his election affidavits. In 2019 an incident in Amravati involving a student recording a public interaction led to a dispute over the student's detention. In November 2024 an FIR recorded allegations related to distribution of cash during the Maharashtra assembly elections; police action included seizure of funds and Tawde later issued a legal notice alleging defamation and seeking damages.
