Vishagan Sulur Vanangamudi was born on 4 September 1983 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in the city that remains his hometown, he completed higher education at Christ University in Bengaluru and holds a Master of International Business. He comes from a family with commercial roots: his father, Sulur Vanangamudi, founded the pharmaceutical firm Apex Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. in 1978.

Vishagan is primarily known for his role in his family business. He serves as an executive director at Apex Laboratories, a Chennai-based pharmaceutical company established by his father. Prior to that marriage, he was married to magazine editor Kanikha Kumaran; that marriage ended in divorce.
