Vivan Bhatena Biography

Mumbai-born actor, model and host Vivan Bhatena transitioned from modelling and music videos to television and films. Known for roles in Kyunki Saas Bhi...

Early life and background

Vivan Bhatena was born on 28 October 1978 in Mumbai and grew up in the same city. Raised in a household with Parsi and Maharashtrian roots, he developed a strong interest in cinema from an early age. School was difficult for him socially, and films became a refuge that shaped his future ambitions. He completed his schooling at Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School and later attended Jai Hind College. His academic credentials include an MBA and a course in cinematography and photography.

Career

Bhatena began his career as a model while still in college, winning early assignments such as a print campaign for Levi’s and appearing in music videos, including the popular Falguni Pathak song “Maine Payal Hai Chhankai.” Success in modelling led him to the Grasim Mr India contest, where he won the title and later explored theatre to deepen his acting skills.

Television offered his first significant acting break. After work on music videos drew the attention of a Balaji Telefilms team, he joined the cast of the long-running soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2000, playing Abhishek. Over the following years he appeared in a string of Hindi serials, including Vaidehi (2006), Chand Ke Paar Chalo (2008), Pyaar Ka Bandhan (2009) and Sanskaar Laxmi (2011). At a point he decided to step away from daily soaps as he felt the medium was no longer aligned with his goals.

Transitioning to other media, Bhatena worked as an MTV VJ and later entered reality television as a contestant on Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7. He has taken on supporting roles in a variety of Hindi films such as Chak De! India (2007), Karthik Calling Karthik (2010), Dangal (2016), Judwaa 2 (2017), Hate Story 4 (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021). In 2017 he also acted in the Telugu film Raja the Great.

In 2021 he portrayed Lord Hanuman in the web series Ramyug, a role that required a notable physical transformation and presented a new set of challenges he welcomed. Throughout his career he has maintained an interest in varied on-screen work and has been featured on several magazine covers.

Public profile

Bhatena’s physical presence has been part of his professional identity: he is approximately 1.78 m (5'10") tall, with an athletic build. He is a fitness enthusiast who trains regularly and has competed in car racing and volleyball events. His public persona includes interests beyond acting—photography, travel, food and gadgets are referenced in his social media description.

Personal life

Vivan Bhatena married businesswoman Nikhila Palat in 2007. The couple have a daughter, Nivaya Bhathena, who was born on 9 June 2019. He is a dog owner and often shares moments with his pet, Muffin. He drives a blue Audi and lists crispy fish among his favourite foods.

Views and approach

In interviews he has described film and television as formative influences that helped him learn social dynamics and develop as a performer. He has spoken about the frustrations he experienced in television, including challenges securing meaningful roles and periods of limited work, and how those setbacks pushed him toward film, theatre and other formats. He has also reflected on the financial stresses that affected many in the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latest updates

Recent notable appearances include supporting roles in mainstream Hindi films through 2021 and a prominent part in the 2021 web series Ramyug. He remains active on social media where he shares professional and personal updates, and continues to pursue fitness and photographic interests.
