Early life and background
Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri was born on 21 December 1973 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He completed a science degree and a postgraduate diploma in Planning (Economics) from the School of Social Science at Bhopal University. Further studies included an advertising course at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi and an Organisation & Management course (CSS) at Harvard University. He comes from a family with a history of involvement in India’s freedom movement and has said his family received recognition from the President of India for that contribution.

Career
Agnihotri began his professional life in advertising, working with major agencies and brands including J. Walter Thompson, Ogilvy & Mather, McCann, Maggi, Nestlé, P&G, Gillette and Coca‑Cola. He later started his own advertising firm, Art Beat, in Delhi. The agency grew quickly and was recognised among the fastest growing in the country by Business Today.

Transitioning into film and television, Agnihotri wrote for a number of television series and produced an award‑winning documentary titled Social Justice in India. Agnihotri has also written books, including Urban Naxals (2018) and Who Killed Shastri (2020). Urban Naxals was described as a fast‑selling title in the year of its release.
