Early life and background
Pinnaduwage Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva was born on 29 July 1997 in Galle, Sri Lanka. He grew up in Galle and attended Richmond College, where he began to attract attention as a promising cricketer. Initially a fast‑bowling youngster, Hasaranga converted to leg spin after encouragement from a coach who recognized the speed of his throwing arm. He came through school and age‑group cricket, joining Sri Lanka’s Under‑13s and later representing the country at Under‑19 level.

Career
Hasaranga progressed through domestic cricket with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club and other provincial teams including Colombo, Dambulla and Galle.
