Early life and background

Warren Martin Anderson was born on 29 November 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Swedish immigrants who had settled in the Bay Ridge neighborhood. As a child he helped his father, who worked as a carpenter, and took on small jobs such as delivering newspapers.

Anderson won academic and athletic scholarships to Colgate University, where he studied chemistry and graduated in 1942. He then joined the U.S. Navy and trained as a fighter pilot, though he did not see combat. During his naval service he also played football on a team coached by Paul "Bear" Bryant.

Career

After leaving the Navy, Anderson entered the chemical industry and accepted a position with Union Carbide, beginning his career as a salesperson. Over time he moved through a variety of roles and geographic assignments, taking managerial responsibility across Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East and working in multiple company divisions including chemicals, plastics, gas, metals and carbon.

While employed at Union Carbide he earned a law degree from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve) in Cleveland in 1956.

In 1979, as president and chief operating officer, Anderson faced corporate shortfalls when Union Carbide missed its sales and profit targets. He became chairman and chief executive in 1982. In that period he pursued efficiency measures, sought to boost sales and oversaw acquisitions such as STP Oil. Under his leadership the company operated hundreds of plants in more than three dozen countries.

Bhopal and legal aftermath

During Anderson's tenure as chairman and CEO, the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, experienced a catastrophic gas release on the night of 2–3 December 1984. The leak exposed large numbers of local residents to methyl isocyanate and caused widespread injury and death. The disaster is recorded as one of the deadliest industrial accidents in history, with hundreds of thousands affected and thousands of fatalities linked to subsequent illnesses.

Anderson travelled to Bhopal four days after the incident and was arrested on arrival. He was released on bail the same day, transported to Delhi on a government aircraft, and left India; he did not return to face trial. Authorities in India filed manslaughter charges and issued repeated summonses; a non-bailable warrant was issued in 1989 after he failed to appear. In 1987 the national investigative agency filed a chargesheet naming Anderson and others, and in 1989 Union Carbide paid $470 million to the Indian government to settle legal disputes related to the disaster.

Indian courts and officials repeatedly sought his extradition, and through subsequent years arrest warrants and public demands for prosecution continued. Indian authorities later described Anderson as an absconder and labelled him a fugitive for not answering the summonses.

Public profile

Across his career Anderson was known for steering a large multinational chemical company through growth and controversy. During the late 1970s and early 1980s he led efforts to raise sales and streamline operations while presiding over a company that became increasingly criticized for pollution in some quarters.

In private life he was married to Lillian Anderson. The couple did not have children. In later years Anderson spent time between homes in Vero Beach, Florida; Greenwich, Connecticut; and Bridgehampton, New York, and enjoyed gardening, fishing and baking a family Swedish bread recipe.
