Early life and background
Waseem Abbas was born on 9 September 1957 in Lahore, Pakistan. Raised in a family active in the entertainment industry, his father was Inayat Hussain Bhatti and his mother was Mohtarma Shahida Bano. Growing up in Lahore, Abbas joined theatrical productions at a young age and learned the practical side of stagecraft by working behind the scenes—managing sets and operating curtains—before taking on acting roles.

Career
Abbas made his television acting debut on PTV in 1979 with the series Ek Haqeeqat Ek Fasana. Early television work that brought him notice included the 1983 serial Samundar, in which he played the character Yasir, and the 1986 drama Hazaron Raaste, where he portrayed Zubair. Over the decades he has balanced acting with directing and screenwriting across television and film.

His film debut in Urdu came in 1981 with Manzil, in which he played Vicky. He continued in Urdu cinema with titles such as Zara Si Baat (1982), Tina (1983), Badaltay Rishtay (1983) where he played Aamir, Naseebon Wali (1984) and First Blood (1986). Abbas also worked in Punjabi films; his Punjabi debut Shah Behram (1985) was directed by his paternal uncle Kaifee. Subsequent Punjabi films include Haq Mehar (1985), Jatt Majhay Da (1988), Ishq Rog (1989), Jugnu (1987), Action (1991), Sarmaya (1990) and Mera Inteqam (1992).

On television he expanded into comedy and direction. In 1997 he acted in and directed Family Front for PTV, playing the role of Azam alongside Saba Hameed. He served as actor and director on the 1998 series Home Sweet Home, and later both acted in and directed Mr. & Misses (2006) for PTV Home. He was involved as writer and performer on Lahori Gate (2007), contributing the screenplay while appearing in a supporting role.

Abbas has continued to work in prominent television productions into the 2010s and 2020s. He wrote and directed Ladoon Mein Palli (2014) for Geo TV, which featured his son Ali Abbas. He appeared in the mainstream film Punjab Nahi Jaungi (2017) as Jawad Khagga. On television he contributed to a mixture of roles and creative duties: he wrote the 2018 ARY Digital series Do Biwiyan Ek Bechara and performed the role of Raees in the 2021 ARY Digital drama Mere Humsafar. Other notable television credits include Ashiyana (1997), Mera Saaein season 2 (2012), Zindagi Gulzar Hai (2013), Deewana (2016), Kashf (2020) and Zakham (2022).
