Washington Sundar is an Indian bowling allrounder from Chennai who has represented India across formats and played for multiple domestic and IPL teams. A左‑
Early life and backgroundWashington Sundar was born on 5 October 1999 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a cricketing family, his father Mani Sundar (also referred to as M. Sundar) played domestic cricket and helped guide Washington’s early development. He learned the game alongside his elder sister Shailaja, who also played cricket, and received coaching from his father before moving on to formal training with coaches including M. Venkataramana and mentor M. Senthilnathan.
Sundar attended St Bede's School in Chennai and later studied at the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, completing a Bachelor of Business Administration. He grew up in Chennai and identifies with Tamil ethnicity and Hinduism. From a young age he combined batting and bowling in junior cricket, progressing rapidly through state age-group teams.
Career
Sundar is a left-handed batter and a right-arm offbreak bowler, described as a bowling allrounder. He rose through Tamil Nadu’s age-group system, representing the state at Under-16, Under-19, Under-22 and Under-23 levels, and finished as Tamil Nadu’s leading run-scorer in Under-16 tournaments in 2013. That performance earned him selection for a BCCI training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and later selection for India’s Under-19 side, including appearances at the Under-19 World Cup.
He made his international Twenty20 debut for India on 24 December 2017 against Sri Lanka and his One Day International debut on 13 December 2017 against Sri Lanka. Sundar became the youngest player to debut for India in T20 internationals at 18 years and 80 days. He made his Test debut on 15 January 2021 against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, where he scored 62 in his first Test innings and produced a memorable moment by clearing the rope with an unconventional six.
At the domestic and franchise level, Sundar has a long list of affiliations. He has represented Tamil Nadu in first-class cricket since 2016 and played for representative sides such as India A, India C, the Indian Board President’s XI and Duleep Team B. His club and league cricket includes stints with Globe Trotters Sports Club, Madras Rubber Factory and regional teams in the Tamil Nadu Premier League including Tuti Patriots and Siechem Madurai Panthers.
In the Indian Premier League Sundar first appeared with Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement in 2017. He was then bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 and remained with them through the 2021 season. In the 2022 auction Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him, and in the 2025 auction Gujarat Titans secured his services. He has also played county cricket, turning out for Lancashire in 2022 and a County Select XI in 2021.
Sundar has experienced both highs and setbacks on the field. He was part of India’s squad during series impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and tested positive for COVID-19 in January 2022, which led to a replacement being named for an upcoming series. He has also been involved in on-field moments that drew attention, including a controversial third-umpire dismissal in an IPL game in April 2025 when he was given out for 49.
Public profile
Sundar is known for his cricketing versatility and a calm presence on the field. He wears jersey numbers including 5 and 55 for India and 555 in the IPL at times. Personal interests include travel, photography and music, and he keeps a pet dog. He has a tattoo of his mother’s face on his chest and is noted to have piercings in both ears. Among his listed preferences are batting idols such as Sunil Gavaskar and sporting influences outside cricket like Rafael Nadal.
Latest updates
In the 2025 IPL auction Sundar was bought by the Gujarat Titans for a reported Rs 3.2 crore contract. During an April 2025 IPL match for Gujarat Titans, he was dismissed on 49 by a delivery from Mohammed Shami in a decision that went to the third umpire and sparked debate. Earlier franchise movements include a high-value purchase by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022.
