Wriddhiman Saha Biography

Wriddhiman Prasanta Saha is an Indian wicket-keeper batsman known for his Test exploits and a long domestic and IPL career. A Bengal cricketer by origin, S

Early life and background

Wriddhiman Prasanta Saha was born on 24 October 1984 in Siliguri, West Bengal. Raised in the same city, he attended Siliguri Boys’ High School and later enrolled at Siliguri College of Commerce, a course he did not complete as he chose to focus on cricket. His father, Prasanta Saha, played local football and cricket in Siliguri leagues, and the family environment helped shape Wriddhiman’s early sporting interests.

Career

Saha began his first-class journey with Bengal and made an immediate impact when he scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2007–08 season, an unbeaten 111 against Hyderabad. That performance helped him earn an Indian Premier League contract with Kolkata Knight Riders for the inaugural 2008 season. Strong early displays also led to selection for India A.

In February 2010 Saha made his Test debut against South Africa in Nagpur. He later made his One-Day International debut on 28 November 2010 versus New Zealand in Guwahati. Over the following years he established himself as one of India’s specialist wicket-keepers in the longest format, especially after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket in 2014.

Saha has represented several IPL franchises across his career, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings (as reserve keeper), Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans. Notable IPL highlights include a century in the 2014 IPL final for Kings XI Punjab, when he scored 115 from 55 balls, and a strong 2014 season overall that contributed to his team reaching the final.

On the domestic front, Saha has been part of significant partnerships and record performances. He featured in a 417-run stand that at the time was the highest sixth-wicket partnership in the Ranji Trophy and the third-highest in Indian first-class history. He also holds a record for a blistering domestic century, reaching 102 off just 20 balls.

In Tests he produced several landmark performances: twin fifties at Eden Gardens earned him a Man of the Match in October 2016, and in March 2017 he scored 117 against Australia at the JSCA International Stadium, sharing a 199-run seventh-wicket partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara. He is credited with wicketkeeping milestones as well — including being the first Indian wicket-keeper to take ten catches in a single Test and joining an elite group of Indian keepers who have effected six dismissals in a Test innings.

Injuries affected parts of his international career. A hamstring problem during the 2018 South Africa series, compounded by later fitness issues, saw him lose his place to Rishabh Pant. He continued to play in the IPL and domestic cricket, joining Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2019 season and performing as an opener for them in 2020.

Saha’s domestic movements included a brief switch from Bengal to Tripura in 2022 after a disagreement with the state association; he later returned to Bengal after discussions with Sourav Ganguly.

Public profile

Saha is known by nicknames such as Papali and Pops. He bats right-handed and bowls occasional right-arm off-spin. He has worn the number 6 jersey for India and the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. His on-field achievements were recognized in 2022 when the Government of West Bengal awarded him the Banga Bibhushan.

Off the field, Saha has been open about incidents where he felt mistreated; in 2022 he revealed that he had been threatened by a sports journalist and raised the issue publicly. His wife, Romi Saha (also referred to as Debarati), operates a food outlet in Kolkata named Puran Dhaka. The couple married on 28 June 2011 and have two children, a son Anvay and a daughter Anvi.

Latest updates

Saha announced his retirement from all formats on 3 November 2024. Prior to that he had been signed by the Gujarat Titans in the 2022 IPL auction and was included in India’s squads for key events such as the World Test Championship final and the 2021 tour of England.

Across a long career at state, IPL and international levels, Wriddhiman Saha built a reputation as a specialist Test wicket-keeper and a capable middle-order batter capable of match-defining contributions.
