Early life and backgroundYasir Shah was born on 2 May 1986 in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Raised in a Pashtun family, he attended Quaid-e-Azam Public School in Swabi and later graduated from Swabi College. His upbringing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained a touchstone throughout his career.
Career
A right-handed batter and a right-arm leg-break bowler, Yasir made his first-class debut in 2002 and reached the international stage nearly a decade later. He made his One Day International and T20 international debuts against Zimbabwe in Harare on 14 September 2011 and 16 September 2011 respectively. His Test debut came on 22 October 2014 against Australia in Dubai, following the suspension of Saeed Ajmal.
Yasir established himself rapidly as a leading bowler for Pakistan. In June 2015 he became the fastest Pakistani to reach 50 Test wickets, accomplishing the feat in only nine Tests. The following years brought further milestones: in October 2016 he became the second-fastest bowler ever to reach 100 Test wickets, doing so in 17 matches; and in December 2018 he set the mark for the fastest to 200 Test wickets, reaching that total in 33 Tests and breaking a long-standing record held by an Australian leg-spinner. In July 2016 he recorded a rare achievement at Lord's, becoming the first leg-spinner in 49 years to take a five-wicket haul in the first innings of a Test there.
His performances in home and away series earned him standout seasons. In Pakistan’s 2015 Test series win over Sri Lanka he took 24 wickets across three matches and was named Man of the Series. That form helped him reach the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings in July 2016.
At the domestic and franchise level, Yasir has represented a number of teams including Abbottabad Rhinos, Pakistan Customs, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, Lahore Qalandars, Rest of North West Frontier Province, Trinbago Knight Riders and overseas sides such as Brisbane Heat. He joined Brisbane Heat for the Big Bash League in 2017 and was named to the Khulna Titans squad for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. In August 2018 the Pakistan Cricket Board awarded him a central contract for the 2018–19 season.
He wears jersey number 86 for Pakistan and has worked under coaches including Mickey Arthur. Yasir’s bowling arsenal is noted for leg-spinners, googlies and flippers, and he cites Shane Warne among his cricketing influences.
Public profile
Yasir’s physical profile is listed at approximately 1.68 meters (5 feet 6 inches) and 75 kilograms. He has brown eyes and black hair. Off the field he has described travel and listening to music among his hobbies and is known to be a non-vegetarian. He comes from a cricketing extended family and is a cousin of fellow cricketers Fawad Ahmed and Junaid Khan.

Yasir’s career has included off-field controversies reported in the public domain. In 2015 he faced an anti-doping rule charge under the ICC Anti-Doping Code. In December 2021 his name appeared in media reports concerning a criminal complaint lodged with police; details of that matter were widely reported.
Latest updates
By late 2018 Yasir had claimed 200 Test wickets in the fewest matches at that time, and he continued to be active in domestic and franchise competitions through the 2018–19 seasons. He remained a centrally contracted Pakistan Test player for the 2018–19 season as awarded by the PCB.
