Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC) Biography
Yogendra Singh Yadav is a serving Indian Army officer and one of the living recipients of the Param Vir Chakra for extraordinary bravery during the 1999 Kg
Early life and backgroundYogendra Singh Yadav was born on 10 May 1980 in Aurangabad Ahir village in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a military household: his father, Karan Singh Yadav, served in the Indian Army and took part in the 1965 and 1971 wars. Yogendra attended the local government school in his village and completed education up to Class 10.
Inspired by his elder brother Jitendra, who had already joined the armed forces, Yogendra decided to pursue a military career. He joined the Indian Military Academy in June 1996 as a cadet in the Manekshaw Battalion. After 19 months of training he graduated on 6 December 1997 and formally entered service in the Indian Army at a young age.
Career
Yogendra joined the Army as a young soldier and served with The Grenadiers regiment, 18th Battalion. He was part of the Ghatak Platoon and took part in frontline operations during the 1999 Kargil War, including engagements at Tololing and the assault on Tiger Hill.
On the night of 3–4 July 1999, Yogendra volunteered for a hazardous climb to reach enemy positions on Tiger Hill. The attack required scaling a steep, snowbound and rocky section at high altitude. Under intense enemy automatic, grenade and rocket fire, the platoon suffered casualties and the advance stalled. Yogendra moved forward to fix a rope for the team, crawled toward enemy bunkers despite heavy fire, lobbed grenades and engaged in close combat. He sustained multiple bullet wounds during the action but continued fighting, killing several enemy combatants and enabling his platoon to renew the assault and capture the position.
For his actions during the Kargil War, Yogendra Singh Yadav was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration for valour. The award citation recognises his courage and determination during extremely adverse circumstances. He continued his service in the Indian Army and rose to the rank of Major; his service number is 2690572 and his years of service are listed from 1997 to the present.
