Yogesh Kathuniya Biography

Yogesh Kathuniya is an Indian Paralympic discus thrower from Delhi. A former Guillain-Barré syndrome patient who recovered mobility after intensive physio

Early life and background

Yogesh Kathuniya was born on 3 March 1997 in Delhi, India. He grew up in a family with an army background—his father, Gyanchand Kathuniya, served in the Indian Army—and spent part of his childhood in the Chandimandir cantonment area. Yogesh attended Army Public School in Chandigarh and later enrolled at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, where he completed a B.Com.

At the age of eight Yogesh suffered a paralytic attack and was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, which led to quadriparesis and left him dependent on a wheelchair. His mother, Meena Devi, learned physiotherapy techniques and devoted years to his rehabilitation. After sustained physiotherapy he regained strength and mobility and was eventually able to stand and walk again.

Career

Yogesh took an interest in para-athletics while at Kirori Mal College. Encouraged by a college friend, he tried discus throw and his athletic potential drew the attention of college coaches. He went on to train under coach Naval Singh at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and later worked with Virender Dhankar when circumstances required a coaching change.

Yogesh’s international breakthrough came in 2018. That year he won gold in shot put at the Open Para Athletics Championship in Bengaluru and set a world mark in discus at the World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin with a throw recorded at 45.18 m in his classification. In 2019 he earned a bronze medal in the men’s discus throw F56 at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, a result that also secured a quota for the 2020 Paralympic Games.

At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Yogesh won the silver medal in the men’s discus throw F56 with a best effort of 44.38 m. He continued to perform at the highest level and won a silver medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, recording a season-best throw of 42.22 m in the final.

Public profile

Yogesh is commonly known by the nickname Yogi. He competes in the F56 classification for discus throw and has black hair and black eyes. He stands about 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) tall. His training and early competitive development were supported by friends and fellow athletes; the family acknowledged assistance that helped him travel for competitions early in his career.

Off the field Yogesh has hobbies that include playing video games. During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown he launched a YouTube channel called Bichu Don Gaming, where he shares gameplay videos of PUBG and occasional vlogs of training and daily life. Family has remained a visible influence in his journey: his mother’s persistence with physiotherapy was repeatedly credited by Yogesh and his family as essential to his recovery and later athletic achievements.

Latest updates

Yogesh’s medal at the 2019 World Championships secured his place at the Tokyo Paralympics, where he won silver. He later added another Paralympic silver in Paris in 2024. Throughout his career he has trained under Naval Singh and, when needed, under Virender Dhankar. Yogesh remains unmarried and has an elder sister.

His competitive honours include the 2018 world-level discus performance in Berlin, the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships bronze in Dubai, the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, and silver at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. He also won gold in shot put at the 2018 Open Para Athletics Championship in Bengaluru.
