Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. was born on July 27, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in difficult family circumstances and was raised for much of his childhood by his grandmother. Thornton recalled observing hard lessons from his grandmother that shaped his independence. He attended Hamilton High School in Illinois and later identified as being from the Memphis community.

Career
Thornton began releasing music under the name Young Dolph with a mixtape debut titled Paper Route Campaign in 2008. He founded his own record label, Paper Route Empire, in 2010 and used the imprint to issue projects and promote artists. Early mixtapes that raised his profile included High Class Street Music and High Class Street Music Episode 2, released in 2011.

He continued to grow his catalog through the 2010s. Young Dolph’s first studio album, King of Memphis, arrived in 2016 and reached the Billboard 200. That same period included a featured appearance on the single “Cut It” alongside O.T. Genasis. In 2017 and 2018 he released music that responded to real-life incidents around him, including the song “Bulletproof” and the EP Niggas Get Shot Everyday. He also collaborated frequently with his cousin-by-marriage and fellow rapper Key Glock; the two released the album Dum and Dummer in July 2019, which became his first album to place in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.
