Early life and background

Yuvraj Singh Bhundel was born on 12 December 1981 in Chandigarh, India. Growing up in a family with strong cricketing connections, he attended DAV Public School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, and completed education up to the 10th standard. His father, Yograj Singh, is a former Indian fast bowler who later worked in Punjabi films. Yuvraj’s early sporting interests included roller-skating and tennis; he even won a national U-14 roller-skating title before concentrating on cricket.

Career

Yuvraj made his international debut in One Day Internationals on 3 October 2000 against Kenya in Nairobi. He earned his Test debut on 16 October 2003 against New Zealand at Mohali and appeared in his first T20 international on 13 September 2007 versus Scotland in Durban. Over his international career he played 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is for India.

A left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Yuvraj became known for his aggressive strokeplay and the slog-sweep as a favored shot. Injuries and illness interrupted his playing days, but he made notable comebacks. After a prolonged battle with cancer that required chemotherapy, he returned to competitive cricket and continued to play at the highest levels. Yuvraj announced his retirement from international cricket on 10 June 2019.
