Zabi Khan Biography
Zabi Khan is an Indian animal rights activist from Hyderabad who founded the NGO A Place to Bark. Beginning his work after rescuing an abandoned puppy as a
Early life and backgroundZabi Khan was born on 11 June 1997 in Hyderabad, Telangana. Raised in a middle-class family, he grew up in his hometown and later attended KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology (KGRCET) in Hyderabad, where he completed a degree in computer science. As a youth he developed interests in reading and travelling, and enjoyed sports such as football and basketball.
An early turning point came at age 13, when he found an abandoned puppy on the street. After attempting to locate the animal’s owners and failing, he brought the dog home and named him Casanova. The puppy became ill and died a short time later from a severe bacterial infection. That experience profoundly affected Khan and motivated his decision to dedicate himself to preventing suffering among abandoned animals.
Career
Khan began volunteering at local NGOs and animal shelters in Hyderabad following the loss of his first pet. In 2014 he established the nonprofit A Place to Bark, aiming to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned and abused dogs. He launched the organisation with family support, initially operating from a rented space near his home.
While studying engineering, Khan found it difficult to manage both coursework and his NGO. He persuaded his college to allow a shelter on campus, making KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology India’s first animal-friendly educational campus. The campus shelter provided care for a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, turkeys and ducks.
A Place to Bark conducts regular adoption drives; in 2018 the organisation placed 28 local puppies at a single event held during Numaish in Nampally. Khan has also collaborated with fashion designers in Hyderabad to stage shows that highlight issues of animal abuse. As of 2020 he was caring for eight abandoned dogs at his own home.
Recognition and public work
Khan’s volunteer work has been recognised by several honours. He received awards such as Ashoka Youth Venturer and Rise Young Citizen in 2017, and a National Youth Icon for Humility and The Pride of Telangana Award in 2018. In 2019 he received a V-Award from the UN Volunteers India initiative. On International Volunteers Day in 2020 he was acknowledged by the United Nations and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports as one of India’s best volunteers.
He was nominated for the Padma Shri in 2018. In 2020 Khan took part in the reality television show MTV Roadies Revolution, using the platform to raise awareness about the protection of abandoned animals.
Impact
By 2020 Khan had been involved in rescuing and helping thousands of animals; the licensed material reports that he had saved more than 3,000 animals up to that year. His campus shelter and regular adoption drives have been central to his strategy for rehabilitation and rehoming, and his work has included public outreach through events and media appearances to change attitudes toward stray and abandoned pets.
Public profile
Khan is noted for his visible presence in Hyderabad’s animal welfare community. Public-facing activities include organising adoption events every six months and partnering on awareness activities such as fashion shows focused on animal abuse. He has described the personal experiences that led him into activism and continues to speak about animal protection in interviews and public forums.
Personal life
Khan is unmarried. He has a sister named Shumaila Syed and has kept multiple rescued dogs as pets. His favourite international football player is Neymar, and he has cited singers such as Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus among his musical preferences. He lists The Chronicles of Narnia as a favourite book and enjoys television programs including Bigg Boss and MTV Roadies.
Latest updates
As of 2020, Khan remained active in rescue and rehabilitation work through A Place to Bark, continued to run adoption drives, and used media opportunities such as MTV Roadies Revolution to advocate for abandoned animals. The organisation and his college-based shelter continued to host and care for a variety of animals on an ongoing basis.
