Early life and background

Zakir Khan was born on 20 August 1987 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into a middle-class musical Muslim family. Music runs in his family: his grandfather Ustad Moinuddin Khan was a sarangi maestro and his father worked as a music teacher. Zakir trained in sitar from a young age and completed a diploma in the instrument. He enrolled in college but left before completing a degree.

After his diploma he moved around seeking work. He learned radio programming in Delhi, spent time working in Jaipur beginning in 2009, and later returned to Delhi where he supported himself through a variety of jobs. For several years he worked as a copywriter at a private company while pursuing performances on the side.

Zakir began performing stand-up in small venues and cafés, where early shows could be uneven and occasionally ended quickly when material did not land.
