Zerifa Wahid Biography

Zerifa Wahid is an Assamese actress and producer who began her screen career as a child artist and has since become a prominent figure in Assamese cinema,,

Early life and background

Zerifa Wahid was born on 18 August 1979 in Lakhimpur, Assam. Raised in a family with roots in the region, she completed her schooling at Nichols High School in Guwahati and pursued higher studies at Cotton College before moving to the University of Delhi for post-graduation. After returning to Assam she also completed a law degree from J B Law College and went on to practice as an advocate at the Guwahati High Court.

Career

Zerifa’s screen journey started early: she made her debut as a child artist in the film Abhimaan (1990). Over the years she has built a steady career in the Assamese film industry as both an actress and a producer. Her filmography spans roles in commercially and critically recognized Assamese features, including Agnigarh (1994), Atikram (1994), Antaheen Jatra (2004), Kadambari (2004), Ahir Bhairav (2008) and Bhoga Khirikee (2018).

Her performance work has been acknowledged at regional award events. In 2003 she won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) at the Assam State Film Awards for Agnisakshi, and in 2014 she received the Best Actress award at the inaugural Filmfare Awards East for her role in Dwaar.

Beyond acting for the screen, Zerifa has been active in theatre. She established a production company, Zerifa Wahid Productions, becoming the first Assamese actress known to form her own production house. Through that banner she has produced and performed in stage productions such as Agnibrishti, Pancharatna, Nagamandala and Purush. To raise the profile of live theatre in Guwahati she helped organize the JUST THEATRE festival in 2014, presenting plays including Nagamandala, Napoleon and Love Letters.

Her onscreen choices have included challenging characters: she played a rural girl in Antaheen Jatra and took on the role of a character with schizophrenia in Ahir Bhairav, a film noted for being shot entirely in London.
