While most people are happy with 1 Gig internet speeds, if they even get that, Google isn’t, and wants to give faster speeds to all of its Fiber customers. Today, the company announced that GFiber’s cheapest Core 1 Gig plan will triple to 3 Gig in select cities, and it’ll still be only $70 per month. Whoa!
What started as a small project delivering Gigabit internet to Kansas City in 2012, GFiber (formerly Google Fiber) is now available in more than 15 states and dozens of cities.
In a blog post, GFiber announced a new multi-gig approach aimed at putting customers first. The idea is to push the limits once again of what customers expect or want from their home internet provider. In 2012, Gigabit internet was still brand new, and nowadays it’s not enough for some people. Moving forward, the goal is to make multi-gig internet the standard for everyone.
Seriously, the new base plan for GFiber will offer 3 Gig speeds, with the mid-tier Home 3 Gig plans getting a bump to 5 Gig, without a price increase. However, it’s important to note that this is only happening in one city, at least right now, but more are on the way. Today, those in Des Moines, Iowa, are enjoying an internet that’s 3x faster than before.

Starting with Des Moines, and eventually expanding to more cities and states, you can now expect your base package to be blazing fast.
Here’s a breakdown as provided by Google:
- Core 1 Gig becomes Core 3 Gig ($70/month): 3x the symmetrical speed of our original internet and still the same price since 2012.
- Home 3 Gig becomes Home 5 Gig ($100/month): Two more gigs of symmetrical speed plus the GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router with our best Wi-Fi ever.
- Edge 8 Gig ($150/month): Multi-gig gets supercharged with the new GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router.
As you can see, there’s no longer a base package that’s only 1 Gig. Instead, it all starts at 3 Gig while remaining $70 a month. I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty wild.
Furthermore, the announcement briefly mentions new hardware, which is a pretty big deal in itself. Those who upgrade to these new Home 5 or Edge 8 Gig plans now get GFiber’s latest Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 router included. It’s not an expensive add-on, but included in your package.

Your home network speed is becoming obsolete
Back in 2023, Google said it wanted to put 20 Gig internet in people’s homes, started testing 50 Gig fiber a year later, and has slowly expanded its footprint in more cities and states throughout the last few years. The service is still slowly expanding to more regions, all while getting faster than ever.
Unfortunately, Google didn’t share a list of which cities will get this impressive 3x speed boost next, but when How-To Geek asked about the rollout, Nick Saporito, Head of Product at GFiber, said, “The Des Moines launch represents a key initial step that proves the capacity of GFiber’s network. The long-term vision is that all markets are enabled with multi-gig speeds and enhanced value, but we don’t have anything further to announce at this time.”
I’m sure we’ll be hearing more in the coming weeks and months.
