Summary
- Sony is raising prices on the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2, 2026.
- The PS5 is going up $100 to $649.99, while the PS5 Pro is up $150 to $899.99.
- The move is not unexpected, but given that consoles generally go own in price over time, it is unfortunate.
In a move that will shock no one, Sony announced on March 27 that the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player are receiving price hikes. What may shock you, though, is just how big those price hikes will be.
In its statement, Sony said: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

For comparison, the regular PS5 (which we’re big fans of) is currently $549.99, and the PS5 Pro is currently $749.99 — an increase of $100 and $150, respectively. This also isn’t the first price hike these devices have seen. The regular PS5 launched at $499.99, and the PS5 Pro launched at $699.99, so the prices are actually $150 and $200 more than the original price.

Why the increases?
Sony did not give a reason for the price hikes, but it’s easy enough to figure out. RAM and storage prices have been through the roof for a while, thanks to AI data center buildouts. Tariffs in the US have also contributed to rising costs for many products. As such, electronics are seeing price increases almost universally, whether it’s phones, laptops, or gaming consoles. This increase was inevitable.
However, the size of the price hikes is surprising a lot of fans, especially when gaming consoles traditionally see reduced prices over time. Gamers took to Reddit to voice their frustration:
The new prices will go into effect on April 2, 2026. It’s probably a safe bet that there will be a run on these before then, so if you’re thinking about buying a new one, now’s the time. Alternatively, you can consider buying a used PS5, where prices are generally more reasonable.
