What you need to know
- Sony confirms in a short teaser that it will launch a new pair of earbuds on February 12 at 8 am PT (11 am ET).
- While not confirmed, it looks like the company is teasing the WF-1000XM6 with an alleged pill shape redesign.
- A recent leak for the buds suggest it could cost $30 at around $330.
You wanted a teaser, and Sony’s latest for its upcoming earbuds not only confirms they exist, but it also solidifies a launch date.
Sony uploaded an incredibly short teaser for an upcoming pair of earbuds on YouTube this week. The short clip is dark for the most part, with a massive beat drop that feels like Batman should show up. Sony begins by showing off a partial illumination of the earbuds’ form factor before showing the device in its charging case. From this, it looks like we can expect the buds to remain standing in their case, like the WF-1000XM5.
However, the main course in this rumor is the final scene of this teaser, which confirms the “next generation of earbuds. Coming soon.”

The teaser leaves us wanting more, which you could say is the whole point of a teaser. Sony didn’t offer information about this device in the teaser, nor in its video description box. It also didn’t confirm that the buds will be called the “WF-1000XM6,” but we, much like many others, are expecting it to.
Maybe a little different?

It’s only been a few days since the WF-1000XM6 had its renders leak, which alleges a redesign could be inbound. It was reportedly leaked by a retailer that posted the device’s details early. From the images, the WF-1000XM6 might ditch the series’ glossy aesthetic for a matte texture with grip. Other details in the leaked listing suggest the earbuds will feature ANC (active noise cancellation) with an IPX4 water and sweat resistance rating.
The earbuds might also see a slightly redesigned pill shape. This could likely be done to help its in-ear fit. Moreover, that leaked listing claims the device could cost around $330. A potential $30 increase over the last model.
Android Central’s Take
There was a time when you’d look at Sony and think of it as a predominant member of the audio tech game. In a way, that’s still true, as the WF-1000XM5 did a lot right when Sony launched it three years ago. As my fellow news writer Jay Bonggolto said, I need to see the “wow feature.” It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a WF entry from Sony, and I’m hoping there’s something more it’s holding onto. If that impressive beat drop at the beginning of the teaser is any indication, perhaps we’re in for fully immersive sound that jumbles my brain.
