The at-home urine lab, first seen at CES 2023, monitors nutrition and kidney health
Withings’ long-awaited U-Scan, the smart-health device that analyzes your urine from inside your toilet bowl, is finally available to order globally.
The device, which first wowed us at CES in January 2023, has now cleared its regulatory hurdles and is available for consumer sale. It marks a significant step into the future of at-home health monitoring.
For those who need a refresher, the U-Scan is a contactless, pebble-shaped lab that sits in your toilet. It uses a thermal sensor to detect when you are urinating, then collects a small sample, runs it through a test pod, and uploads the results via Wi-Fi to the Withings app.
It’s available in two distinct versions:
- U-Scan Nutrio: Designed for nutritional tracking, it monitors metrics like hydration, vitamin C levels, ketone levels, and bio-acidity (urine pH)
- U-Scan Calci: Aimed at helping users manage and prevent kidney stones, this version tracks hydration, calcium levels, and bio-acidity

This futuristic tech comes at a premium and operates on a subscription model, as the test cartridges need to be replaced. A starter ‘Proactive’ package, which includes one cartridge for less frequent checks, costs $379.95 / £319.95.
The ‘Intensive’ package, with two cartridges for more regular tracking, starts at $449.95 / £389.95. Replacement cartridges will then be shipped automatically, with prices starting at $99.95 / £89.95 per renewal.
The U-Scan joins a small but growing trend of smart bathroom health devices, like Kohler’s recent Dekoda smart toilet sensor for stool analysis, as the industry pushes to capture more biometric data from our daily routines.
