In a new showdown, XREAL has filed a new lawsuit in the United States against its rival Viture over smart glasses technology. The tech giant had earlier filed a similar lawsuit in Germany last year. XREAL claims that Viture’s XR glasses used its patented technology without permission.
XREAL claims Viture stole its smart glasses technology in a new lawsuit
In a new lawsuit filed in the U.S., XREAL claims that Viture is infringing on U.S. Patent No. 11,988,839. The firm specifically targets the Viture Pro XR glasses for infringement. Though it also mentions that other models may be involved. To further strengthen its point, XREAL argues that the design and technical similarities between the wearables go beyond what would normally happen in the industry.
XREAL believes that the similarities represent the company’s patented product ideas. The patent describes the ideas related to how images are displayed and viewed inside the glasses. The company further adds that it was forced to act upright right now since the market is growing at a much faster rate. It also references research claiming the XR market could become as valuable as nearly $700 billion by 2035.
Viture has not shared its views or position on the matter yet
Analyst Anshel Sag from Moor Insights & Strategy confirmed that the patent was first filed by XREAL in 2018 and officially granted in 2024. He also adds that XREAL is the sole owner of the patent in both the U.S. and Germany and that Viture doesn’t have any patent that describes similar technology.
XREAL and Viture were founded in Beijing. The former was officially launched in the year 2017, while the latter was launched in 2021. XREAL was originally known as Nreal before changing its name in 2023. Moreover, this is not the first time XREAL has been fighting a legal battle against a firm. Back in 2019, Magic Leap sued the company over similar claims. That case was later dismissed by U.S. courts due to a lack of evidence. As for the current case, we will have to wait for the court to deliver its judgment.
