April is looking really good for Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, with a truckload of new movies (new and old), new series premieres and returning/continuing seasons (Daredevil: Born Again and American Idol) and more, strewn across both services that are still in the process of merging into one app in the lead-up to the Hulu app’s end sometime this year. And as we wait for that, it still makes sense to combine what’s new for Hulu and Disney+ in one convenient post.
For fans of one of Star Wars’ deadliest and most polarizing characters, the hot topic for Disney+ in April is undoubtedly going to be Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, which gets its highly anticipated premiere on April 6. The new animated series brings back the iconic red-faced former Sith lord and sees him trying to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a new planet, take his revenge on the Empire, and take a disillusioned Jedi Padawan under his wing. The first two episodes will be available on Disney+ on April 6, and then weekly afterwards.
Other highlights to Disney+ in April include a new season of American Idol (April 13), Disneynature’s Orangutan, narrated by Frozen star Josh Gad (Earth Day, April 22), and new episodes of a handful of popular shows.
Hulu is not to be outdone, however. The service brings gritty and action-packed British series Atomic (April 1) to its screens, starring Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen and Toast of London’s excellent Clem Fandango actor, Shazed Latif. The pair—a drug smuggler and a former insurgent—form an unlikely partnership and find themselves in possession of a truckload of uranium, and must transport it across the desert while the CIA, MI6, and other nefarious organizations hunt them down.
The big movie making its way to Hulu is Park Chan-Wook’s (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) Korean psychological thriller No Other Choice (April 24), about a man who is laid off from his job after 25 years and is desperately trying to land a new one. To secure the position, he decides to track down and “eliminate” all the other candidates.
Of course, Hulu also brings all kinds of new licensed movie titles to the service. Standout films include The Devil Wears Prada, 50 First Dates, Napoleon Dynamite, all the Night at the Museum and Shrek films, 21 and 22 Jump Street, and many more.
