WhatsApp web could soon get almost 50 new desktop themes to enhance your cross-platform messaging experience.
As the desktop counterpart to your mobile messaging app, WhatsApp web is often left high and dry when it comes to updates, but according to WABetaInfo, Meta is working on adding 49 new themes that you will eventually be able to apply while using the bridged WhatsApp experience.
We’ve been able to customize the experience on mobile for a number of years, including chat backgrounds and colors to make the experience truly yours. However, the companion app hasn’t had many controls here. It added a dark mode a few years ago, but this is the height of customization as it stands today.
WhatsApp web is merely a Chromium wrapper that can be used on many platforms – including on Android tablets – and allows you to send and receive messages, take calls, and more after you have paired with your WhatsApp account. As a way to stay connected on various devices, it’s a great option and works in tandem with the companion mode that allows you to send and receive messages on a secondary mobile device. It is, however, not quite as feature-rich.
According to this report, we’ll be able to adjust the message bubble color, which will in turn adjust the background or wallpaper of the chat view. WhatsApp web will allow you to set pre-chat themes, so you’ll get a neat visual reference for specific contacts or group chats if you want that option.
As noted, there appear to be 49 variations in testing right now, which include the current default theme. With the addition of the default light theme, that techinically puts it at 50 – but that is a stretch on our part there.
Choosing a theme on WhatsApp web only applies the look to the user in question. It doesn’t globally theme. What isn’t clear is if this will carry over to your mobile experience, but there are no details on this at this stage. No word from WABetaInfo on potential rollout phase, but expect to see this in beta first before a wider expansion.
