Amnesia takes a particularly horrific turn in the trailer for Affection, which stars Happy Death Day scream queen Jessica Rothe as a very different sort of character who’s questioning the fabric of reality.
After an unspecified “traumatic event,” Ellie awakens with no memories of her life before—including her husband and young daughter. But she can’t seem to shake the feeling that something’s not right, and the red flags keep popping up the more she starts poking around the farmhouse where she either dwells… or is being held captive.
It’s not entirely clear from that short trailer, but Ellie is also struggling with the fact that even when she does remember things, they tend to slip away quickly. So, kind of like 50 First Dates, except very much not a rom-com—or Memento without the little reminder tattoos.
As the film’s official synopsis informs us, “Afflicted by a mysterious condition that resets her memory, Ellie becomes trapped in a cyclical nightmare with a man who claims to be her husband. She soon must uncover the horrifying truth of her existence—before she forgets it all again.”
The cast also includes Joseph Cross and Julianna Layne. Affection is written and directed by BT Meza and hits theaters May 8.
