Early life and backgroundAishwarya Sridhar was born on 12 January 1997 and grew up in Panvel, Maharashtra. Her parents supported her early interest in nature: her father, Sridhar Ranganathan, is associated with the Bombay Natural History Society and introduced her to nature trails and birding at a young age. Schooling in Navi Mumbai and later studies at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science laid the groundwork for her interests; she completed a Bachelor of Mass Media. As a child she wrote poems about conservation, led awareness workshops in schools, and organised nature activities for other young people.
Career
Aishwarya established herself across photography, filmmaking and conservation outreach. She began receiving recognition while still a teenager, becoming the youngest recipient of the Sanctuary Asia Young Naturalist Award in 2011. Over the following years she collected a string of honours for both images and films, including awards at international camera events and film festivals.
Her debut documentary, Panje – The Last Wetland, was released in 2018. In 2019 she won the Best Amateur Film Award at the New York Wildlife Film Festival for The Queen of Taru, a film that follows a tiger named Maya in the Tadoba forest; the film was also nominated at the 9th National Science Film Festival. That same period brought awards such as the Woman Icon Award and the Diana Award, and recognition at short-film competitions.
Aishwarya has been shortlisted and honoured in major photography competitions as well. In 2018 she won Young Digital Camera Photographer of the Year for a picture titled It’s a Small World. In 2020 she became the first Indian woman to receive the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award for a layered image of fireflies titled Lights of Passion. Her photographic work has been published and featured in outlets that include BBC Wildlife, The Guardian, Sanctuary Asia and Mongabay.
Alongside her creative work, Aishwarya contributes to conservation policy and education. She is a member of the State Wetland Identification Committee appointed by the Bombay High Court. For WWF India she directed an eight-part digital series, Fun-Crafts with Aishwarya, and she later hosted Nature For Future, a wildlife chat show on Discovery Channel India that focused on India’s most endangered species.
