Early life and background

Alzarri Shaheim Joseph was born on 20 November 1996 in Antigua, part of the West Indies. Raised in an island cricketing culture, he developed as a fast bowler from an early age with encouragement from his father, Alva Joseph, a member of the Leeward Islands Cricket Club. His mother was Sharon Joseph.

Joseph is tall and physically imposing for a fast bowler, listed at about 1.93 m (6 ft 4 in). He has black hair and black eyes.

Career

Joseph came to wider attention through youth cricket. He captained the West Indies Under-19 side that won the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2016 and was named Man of the Match in West Indies’ game against Zimbabwe during that tournament. He finished that Under-19 competition among the tournament’s quickest bowlers and as a leading wicket taker for his team.

His domestic career began in first-class cricket in the 2014–15 Regional Four Day Competition, representing St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Leeward Island teams. Early in his first-class career he recorded a five-wicket haul and produced a career-best 7 for 49 against Guyana, performances that brought him to the attention of West Indies selectors.

Joseph made his international debuts across formats in 2016. He played his first T20 match in July 2016, made his Test debut versus India in August 2016, and appeared in his first One Day International in October 2016 against Pakistan. He opened the bowling for West Indies in his early Test appearances and took three wickets in the first innings of the third match of that India series. In his ODI debut he took two wickets.

Coaching and technique played a role in his development. Winston Benjamin is credited as a coach/mentor who worked with Joseph on his bowling action and approach, helping him become more focused and patient as a fast bowler.

In 2017 Joseph faced a significant injury setback when a stress fracture in his back required surgery and a period of bed rest. He returned to international cricket after several months and was later placed under additional medical rest on recommendation of the West Indies medical panel to ensure full recovery.

By October 2018 the West Indies Cricket Board awarded him a contract covering all formats for the 2018–19 season.

Indian Premier League and notable performances

Joseph entered the Indian Premier League in 2019 when Mumbai Indians signed him as a replacement for an injured player. In his IPL debut he produced a standout performance, taking six wickets for 12 runs in 3.4 overs — at the time the best bowling figures in IPL history, surpassing the prior 11-year record.

He has worn jersey number 18 for West Indies and number 8 during his time with Mumbai Indians. Joseph’s bowling style is right-arm fast and he bats right-handed. Domestically he has played for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Leeward Island Cricket Club.
