Early life and background

Ankit Rajendra Kumar Tiwari was born on 6 March 1986 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a family with musical roots. His parents performed devotional music as part of a family band, and his grandfather introduced him to percussion at a very young age. Formal vocal training began in early childhood and continued with classical instruction; at times during his training he practiced for long hours. He also learned piano and Dhrupad and received professional training in Western vocals.

He attended Jugal Devi Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Kanpur. In his late teens and early twenties he worked as a production head at a radio station in Gwalior before moving to Mumbai in 2008 with his brother to pursue a career in music. While in Mumbai he composed jingles and background music for television before breaking into film music.

Career

Tiwari’s first credited work as a film music director came with Do Dooni Chaar (2010). His first playback singing credit for a feature film was the song “Saheb Bada Hathila” from Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (2011). He continued to work both as a composer and vocalist for Hindi films and gradually built wider recognition.

His contributions to the soundtrack of Aashiqui 2 (2013), for which he both composed and sang, brought him mainstream acclaim. The work on that project earned him industry awards in 2014, including Filmfare and IIFA recognition as Best Music Director. That period also brought nominations and awards at the Mirchi Music Awards, where Aashiqui 2 received multiple honors and Tiwari was recognized in categories for upcoming vocalists and composers as well as Album of the Year.

After Aashiqui 2 he continued to record charting songs and lend his voice to commercial Bollywood releases. Notable tracks mentioned from his catalog include “Tu Hai Ki Nahi” from Roy (2015), “Dil Cheez Tujhe Dedi” from Airlift (2016), and “Tere Liye” from Sanam Re (2016). He has both composed and sung for other films such as PK (2014), Khamoshiyan (2015), Tum Bin 2 (2016), and Sadak 2 (2020).

Alongside film work, Tiwari has appeared in music videos including Badtameez (2016), Mehbooba (2018), and Tere Do Naina (2019). He is a co-owner of a celebrity management and production company called Brotherhood Entertainment Pvt Ltd. In December 2022 he launched his own music label, Mist Music.
