Ben Laughlin (Cricketer) Biography
Ben Laughlin is an Australian right-arm fast-medium bowler known for his white-ball performances. A late bloomer in first-class cricket, Laughlin rose to a
Early life and backgroundBen Laughlin was born on 3 October 1982 in Box Hill, Melbourne, Australia. He grew up in Box Hill and later pursued cricket through the Queensland grade system. Laughlin is the son of former Australian cricketer Trevor Laughlin, a connection that helped shape his early interest in the sport. He left formal schooling after grade 11 and developed his game while working outside cricket, eventually becoming a professional carpenter in addition to his sporting career.
Career
Laughlin began his competitive cricket pathway in Queensland, playing grade cricket for Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club. A stress fracture at age 19 interrupted his early progress and prompted a change in his bowling approach; he returned to competition bowling off-spin for a period before re-establishing himself as a pace option.
He made his first-class debut for Queensland at the end of the 2007–08 Pura Cup season against Victoria, where he claimed the wicket of Victorian captain Cameron White. The 2008–09 Sheffield Shield season proved pivotal: his performances that season led to selection in the Australian squad for limited-overs matches against South Africa. Laughlin made his international T20 debut on 29 March 2009 at Centurion and his One Day International debut on 3 April 2009 in Durban.
While he did not play Test cricket for Australia, Laughlin built a substantial domestic and T20 career. He has represented multiple domestic and franchise sides, including Tasmania and Queensland at state level and a wide range of T20 franchises: Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Quetta Gladiators, Antigua Hawksbills, Canterbury, Northern Districts, and others. In domestic leagues he wore jersey numbers such as #56 for the Adelaide Strikers and #55 when appearing for Australia.
Laughlin is a right-handed batsman and bowls right-arm fast-medium, with the outswinger listed as a preferred delivery. In the Big Bash League he achieved a notable milestone in 2015 by becoming the first bowler to reach 50 wickets in the competition. He has also been recognised at the grade level with the Peter Burge Medal awarded to the best grade cricketer in Queensland.
Public profile
Physically, Laughlin stands around 183 cm (6 feet) tall and his playing weight is listed at approximately 70 kg (154 lbs). He has blue eyes and brown hair. Off the field he enjoys woodworking, a hobby that complements his trade as a professional carpenter.
Personal life
Laughlin is married and is the father of a son named Oliver Laughlin. His father, Trevor Laughlin, played cricket at the national level for Australia and served as an early influence on Ben’s career and development.

Career turning points and style
A defining moment came after the 2008–09 Sheffield Shield season, which directly contributed to his inclusion in Australia’s limited-overs squads. Though his international appearances were limited to white-ball formats, he maintained a long domestic and franchise career through adaptability and effectiveness in short formats.
