Early life and background

Bhupinder Singh was born Bhupinder Soin on 6 February 1940 in Amritsar, Punjab, then part of British India. He grew up in a musical household; his father, Natha Singhji, was a trained vocalist and music professor. Despite that environment, Bhupinder initially resisted pursuing music as a career. He learned early musical skills from his father and later developed abilities on guitar and violin while working at All India Radio and Doordarshan in Delhi.

Career

Bhupinder’s professional music journey began in Delhi where he served as a guitarist under the producer Satish Bhatia at All India Radio and Doordarshan until 1964. A 1962 performance brought him to the attention of music director Madan Mohan, who invited him to Mumbai. That led to his recorded debut in 1964 on the film Haqeeqat, where he sang alongside established playback singers and even appeared on screen for the song.

Through the 1960s and 1970s Bhupinder expanded his work in film and as a recording artist. He sang solo songs in the 1966 film Aakhri Khat and contributed notable duets with Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. His collaboration with R. D. Burman included playing guitar on the 1971 film recording of Hare Ram Hare Krishna; Burman regarded him among his valued collaborators. Bhupinder’s first long-play record of self-composed songs was released in 1968, and by 1978 he was experimenting with instrumentation in ghazal albums, incorporating Spanish guitar, bass and drums.

Playing the Hawaiian guitar rekindled Bhupinder’s interest in vocal performance after a period away from singing. He played guitar on Gulzar-written pieces and later partnered with lyricist Gulzar for the 1980 long-play release Woh Jo Shair Tha. After marrying Bangladeshi singer Mitali Mukherjee in the mid-1980s, Bhupinder moved away from film playback work and focused on live concerts and private album releases. He and his wife issued several ghazal and geet cassettes together.

Among the songs associated with him are Dil Dhoondta Hai, Do Diwane Shahar Mein, Naam Gum Jayega, Karoge Yaad To, Meethe Bol Bole, Kabhi Kisi Ko Mukammal, Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar Aaj Bhi and Ek Akela Is Shehar Mein. In 1988 Jagjit Singh invited him to perform a ghazal by Bahadur Shah Zafar for Gulzar’s television serial Mirza Ghalib on Doordarshan.
