Chetan Sakariya was born on 28 February 1998 in Vartej, Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Raised in a family with limited means, he completed his schooling in the science stream up to the 12th grade. Physical details recorded for him list a height of about 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm), dark brown eyes and black hair.

Sakariya learned much of his early cricket in informal settings, playing tennis-ball cricket and largely training himself until he was 16. In the Indian domestic circuit he represented Saurashtra and earned selection in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he finished as one of the leading wicket-takers.
