Early life and background

Daljeet Kaur Khangura was born in 1953 in Siliguri, West Bengal. During her childhood her family returned to their native village of Aitiana in Raikot, Ludhiana, Punjab. She attended St. Helen's School in Kurseong, Darjeeling, and went on to graduate from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi. Wanting to pursue acting, she completed an acting course at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where she studied alongside classmates such as Satish Shah.

From her school days Daljeet displayed aptitude for academics, the arts and sports. She competed nationally in kabaddi and played hockey during her college years. Though her parents had hoped she would become a doctor, she followed her interest in the performing arts and trained formally in acting.

Career

Daljeet Kaur made her screen debut while still a student at FTII, appearing in Kundan Shah's short film Bonga (1976). That same year she played the role of Laajo in the Punjabi film Daaj, a production that became a significant success for her early career. Over the following decades she established herself as a leading figure in Punjabi cinema and also worked in a number of Hindi and regional films.

She took on a variety of memorable roles, including a double role in the Punjabi film Saidan Jogan that drew particular attention and helped bring female audiences back to Punjabi theatres. In the early 1980s she appeared in several high-profile Punjabi releases, notably Putt Jattan De (1983) in which she played Paali, and Maamla Garbar Hai (1983), among other popular titles through the 1980s and into the 1990s.

Her filmography spanned around 70 Punjabi films and about 10 Hindi films over a career that lasted roughly 40 years. Notable Punjabi films across her career include Roop Shaqinan Da (1983), Laajo (1983), Ishq Nimana (1984), Kee Banu Duniyan Da (1986), Patola (1988), Anakh Jattan Dee (1990), Udeeka Saun Diyan (1991), Jatt Punjab Da (1992) and Panchayat (1996).

After a period away from the screen following the death of her husband, she returned to acting with a role in the 2002 Punjabi film Jee Aaya Nu, in which she played a character named Daljeet. In later years she appeared in films such as Heer Ranjha and Singh Vs Kaur. One of her last on-screen credits was the 2022 film 22 Chamkila Forever. She was also involved in the film Moga to Melbourne via Chandigarh, a satire filmed in 2013 whose release was delayed and remained unreleased as of 2022.

Her work also included roles in several Hindi films, including Yari Dushmani (1980), Jeene Nahi Doonga (1984), Dacait (1987), and Ek Aur Ek Gyarah (2003). Beyond acting, she was noted to have singing ability and appeared on magazine covers such as Women’s Era.

Daljeet was fluent in Hindi, English, Punjabi and Bengali. Over the course of her career she received recognition and awards for her contributions to Punjabi cinema. She stood approximately 165 cm tall, with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair in later years.

Later years and death

Daljeet Kaur battled a long illness in her later years. Media reports describe a prolonged neurological condition that affected her memory. She died on 17 November 2022 at the age of 69 at her cousin Harjinder Singh Khangura’s home in Kasba Sudhaar Bazaar, Ludhiana, Punjab. Her last rites were conducted the same day at the crematorium in the village of Sadhar.
