Daniel Sams (Cricketer) Biography
Daniel Richard Sams is an Australian left-arm fast-medium bowling all-rounder from Milperra, New South Wales. He has featured for multiple domestic teams,;
Early life and backgroundDaniel Richard Sams was born on 27 October 1992 in Milperra, New South Wales. Raised in the same Sydney suburb listed as his hometown, Sams attended De La Salle College in Revesby Heights. He is Australian by nationality and his reported physical profile lists him at approximately 189 cm (6'2") with brown eyes and ash-brown hair.
Career
Sams developed into a bowling all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls left-arm fast-medium. His domestic career has included appearances for multiple teams in Australia and abroad. He made his first-class debut for Canterbury in the 2017–18 Plunket Shield season in October 2017. Later that year he debuted in Twenty20 cricket for the Sydney Sixers during the 2017–18 Big Bash League on 19 December 2017.
On his Big Bash debut Sams produced an eye-catching performance, taking four wickets for fourteen runs — the best figures recorded by a debutant in that tournament at the time. He went on to play for New South Wales in List A cricket, making his JLT One-Day Cup debut on 18 September 2018.
Sams has represented several domestic and franchise sides, including Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, New South Wales, Vancouver Knights, Delhi Capitals, Canterbury and Australia (in squad contexts). In 2019 he was signed by the Vancouver Knights for the Global T20 Canada tournament. He was later named in a 26-man Australian preliminary squad in July 2020 as part of preparations for a possible tour to England following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Cricket Australia confirmed he would be part of the touring party in August 2020.
In August 2020 Sams was picked up by the Delhi Capitals for the Indian Premier League season as a replacement player. The move followed an injury to another player that created a late opening on the squad. Across his Big Bash League appearances Sams has been a prolific wicket-taker; he recorded 30 wickets in 17 BBL matches, a haul that placed him among the competition’s leading wicket-takers at that stage.
Public profile
Sams wears the number 60 jersey for teams under that listing, and has been coached or mentored by Ricky Ponting according to available information. Off the field he has shared aspects of his life on social media, including reflections on being signed by IPL and images with family and pets.
Personal life
Daniel Sams married his partner Danii on 21 December 2015. The couple have a pet dog named Ollie. His family includes a brother named Anthony Sams. Sams has been described as following Christianity and as having a non-vegetarian diet. He owns a Hyundai Tucson.
Latest updates
In 2020 Sams was involved in both national squad preparations and franchise opportunities: he was included in Cricket Australia’s touring party as part of the England tour preparations after the COVID-19 pause, and he joined the Delhi Capitals for the 2020 IPL season as a replacement signing. His domestic and franchise experience continued to be a focal point of his career trajectory through that period.
