Early life and backgroundDevon Philip Conway was born on 8 July 1991 in Johannesburg, in the Transvaal Province of South Africa. He grew up playing cricket while attending St Johns College in Johannesburg, where he represented the college side and developed into a promising young batter. His father, Denton Conway, worked as a soccer coach, and his mother is Sandy Conway. He has two sisters, Candy and Charne Conway.
Career
Conway began his domestic career in South Africa, representing Gauteng and appearing for Gauteng Under-19s and later the Lions and KwaZulu-Natal Inland. In provincial cricket he produced significant performances, including a maiden first-class double century for Gauteng in 2017. That same year he struggled for consistency in top-tier franchise cricket with the Lions, which prompted him to reassess his career path.
In 2018 Conway relocated to New Zealand with his fiancée Kim Watson. He signed with Wellington for the 2018–19 season and quickly made an impact. He scored a double century early in that Plunket Shield campaign and finished as the competition’s leading run-scorer that season with 659 runs in seven matches. He also topped the Super Smash run charts in 2018–19 with 363 runs in nine matches.
Conway continued to compile large scores for Wellington. In October 2019 he produced an unbeaten 327 against Canterbury, registering one of New Zealand’s rare triple centuries in first-class cricket. In January 2020 he struck an unbeaten century off 49 balls in the Super Smash. His domestic form earned him wider recognition and a place with New Zealand A.
International career
Selectors brought Conway into New Zealand’s full international environment in late 2020. He made his Twenty20 International debut for New Zealand against the West Indies on 27 November 2020. Conway’s Test debut came earlier in November 2020, when he faced the West Indies. He wears jersey number 88 for New Zealand and is coached at the international level by Gary Stead. Conway bats left‑handed and bowls right‑arm medium pace.
Records and honours
Across New Zealand domestic competitions Conway has been a prolific run-scorer, leading the Plunket Shield and Super Smash in 2018–19 and topping the Plunket Shield again in 2019–20 with 701 runs in six matches. On Test debut at Lord’s in June 2021, he reached a double century, becoming one of the small number of batsmen to post a double hundred on their first Test — a milestone reached with a six off Mark Wood.
Domestic and club cricket
Beyond Wellington, Conway’s domestic resume includes spells with the Dolphins, Gauteng, Lions, KwaZulu-Natal Inland and appearances for Somerset 2nd XI. After moving to New Zealand he also joined Victoria University Cricket Club where he combined playing duties with coaching children in the Wellington area, balancing paid work with dedicated practice.
Public profile
Conway holds dual ties in terms of nationality and origin: born in South Africa, he established his professional career in New Zealand and became the second South Africa–born batter to represent New Zealand at international level, following Grant Elliott. His playing style and consistent scoring have made him a prominent figure in New Zealand’s batting ranks.
Personal life
Conway is engaged to Kim Watson; the couple have lived together in New Zealand since his move in 2018. Away from cricket he enjoys playing golf with his fiancée. He is listed as approximately 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. His zodiac sign is Cancer.
Latest updates
By 2024 Conway was 33 years old and continued to be associated with Wellington and the New Zealand national setup. He remains noted for his run-scoring exploits in domestic first-class and T20 competitions and for the milestone of a double century on Test debut.
