Early life and background

Digvijay Rajkumar Deshmukh was born on 12 April 1998 in Ambajol, Beed District, Maharashtra. He grew up in a family that later moved to Mumbai to give him better opportunities for cricket training. He attended Kataria High School in Pune. His father, Rajkumar Deshmukh, has worked as a sports director at a college in Baramati, and his mother is Shobha Deshmukh. He has a sister named Darshana Deshmukh.

Career

Deshmukh is an all-round cricketer who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium. He rose through the domestic system after training at the MIG Cricket Club Academy in Mumbai. He began to feature in senior domestic competitions in the 2019–20 season.

He made his Twenty20 debut for Maharashtra on 12 November 2019 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Across that Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season he played seven matches and claimed nine wickets. A month later, on 17 December 2019, he made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy against Jammu & Kashmir. In that match he produced an impressive all-round performance, taking six wickets and contributing 83 runs while batting at number eight.

Those performances in domestic cricket brought him wider attention and led to his selection at the Indian Premier League auction ahead of the 2020 season. Mumbai Indians acquired him for 20 lakh INR.

Public profile

Deshmukh first appeared in the public eye before his cricketing breakthrough as a child actor. He played the lead child role of Ali in the 2013 film Kai Po Che. After the film’s success he was offered television commercials, but he declined those opportunities, choosing to focus on cricket instead.

Known physically for a height of about 1.85 m (6 feet) with black hair and black eyes, Deshmukh has been described as committed to developing his cricketing career. He had expressed a personal promise tied to his time on the film set: after shooting Kai Po Che he resolved to meet one of the film’s lead actors only once he had achieved notable progress in cricket.

Latest updates

By 2020 Deshmukh remained uncapped at international level in Tests, ODIs and T20 Internationals, and continued to represent Maharashtra in domestic competitions while being part of the Mumbai Indians squad in the IPL setup. His early domestic performances signalled potential as a bowling all-rounder able to contribute with the bat lower in the order.
