Early life and background

Rana Faheem Ashraf was born on 16 January 1994 in Phool Nagar, Punjab, Pakistan. Raised in that town, he grew up in a large family as the eldest of several siblings; his father, Rana Muhammad Ashraf, worked as a lawyer. As a teenager Ashraf considered joining the Pakistan Army, but the 2007 World Twenty20 inspired him to pursue cricket instead.

Faheem stands about 1.78 m (5'10") and is described as a fitness enthusiast who regularly works out. He has said he enjoys Punjabi music and movies in his free time and counts Yo Yo Honey Singh among the singers he likes.

Career

Ashraf made his first-class debut in the 2013–14 season and scored a century against Multan early in his domestic career. He progressed through Pakistan’s domestic circuit, representing teams such as Faisalabad, National Bank, Habib Bank Limited and, later, Central Punjab. While playing for the National Bank of Pakistan in 2015, he came to the attention of national selectors and former off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed, who praised his ability to score quickly lower in the order.

He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2016–17 Departmental One Day Cup with 19 dismissals and led Punjab in the 2017 Pakistan Cup, where he took eight wickets in four matches. His domestic performances helped earn him inclusion in Pakistan squads from 2017 onward.

International debut and early highlights

Ashraf was named in Pakistan’s ODI squad in March 2017 and selected for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in April. He made his ODI debut on 12 June 2017 against Sri Lanka, taking his first international wicket in that match. His T20I debut came on 12 September 2017 against a World XI during the 2017 Independence Cup.

On 27 October 2017, Ashraf became the first Pakistani bowler to take a T20I hat-trick, accomplishing the feat in a match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. The achievement helped Pakistan take the series lead and marked a major early milestone in his international career.

Ashraf was added to Pakistan’s Test squad in April 2018 for tours to Ireland and England and made his Test debut on 11 May 2018 against Ireland.
