Early life and backgroundIsuru Udana Tillakaratna was born on 17 February 1988 in Balangoda, Sri Lanka. Raised in his hometown, he developed into a tall, athletic cricketer, listed at about 182 cm (6 feet) with black hair and black eyes. He is Sri Lankan by nationality and his zodiac sign is Aquarius.
Career
Udana broke into representative cricket in 2008 when he began his first-class and List A career, earning selection with Sri Lanka A during a tour of South Africa. He played domestic cricket for several teams, including Tamil Union, Wayamba and others in Sri Lanka’s provincial competitions, and built a reputation as a useful bowling all-rounder with the ability to contribute lower down the order with the bat.
He made his international Twenty20 debut in June 2009 and later appeared in One Day Internationals, making his ODI debut against India on 24 July 2012. Over the years he has represented Sri Lanka across formats and been part of squads for major tournaments, including Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
Udana is a left-arm fast-medium bowler who bats right-handed. Notable on-field achievements include a unique hat-trick in the 2010 Champions League T20 where he completed a hat-trick across two legal deliveries, becoming the first bowler to record a hat-trick in that competition. In T20 internationals he set a record for the highest individual score from the number eight position when he made 84 runs against South Africa on 22 March 2019. In March 2019 he was also part of a 58-run tenth-wicket partnership with Kasun Rajitha in an ODI against South Africa, the highest tenth-wicket ODI stand for Sri Lanka at the time.
In domestic Twenty20 play he has received player-of-the-match and tournament awards for match-winning bowling performances, including a four-wicket haul that featured top-order scalps and earned him tournament recognition. In May 2018 he was one of 33 cricketers awarded a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket for the 2018–2019 season.
Udana’s franchise career includes a stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, where he wore jersey number 50 and made his IPL debut against the Mumbai Indians on 28 September 2020. He has worn jersey number 17 for Sri Lanka.
