Early life and background

Kamala Kumari, who later became known professionally as Jayanthi, was born on 6 January 1945 in Bellary, Karnataka. Her father, Balasubramanyam, worked as an English professor, and her mother was Santhanalakshmi. After her parents separated, her mother moved with the children to Madras. From a young age her mother encouraged her to study classical dance, an interest that would later shape both her screen presence and acting opportunities.

Jayanthi began working in films while still a teenager. Early in her career she struggled with body image and dance skills, and at first faced rough treatment on set. Determined to improve, she enrolled in a dance school and trained in various Indian classical forms. That training played a key role in her transition from small-supporting parts to leading roles.

Career

Jayanthi made her film debut in 1961 and worked across multiple South Indian film industries. Her earliest credits include Bharya Bhartalu (1961) and Malayalam and Tamil projects from the early 1960s. A Kannada director spotted her while she was rehearsing a dance sequence, and she was cast in the Kannada film Jenu Goodu (1963). Though she had already appeared in Tamil and Malayalam films, Jenu Goodu is credited as the picture that established her in Kannada cinema.

She went on to appear in more than 500 films across Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi, becoming one of the region’s most visible actresses. A breakthrough moment in her career came with the film Miss Leelavathi, a production noted for its daring wardrobe and progressive tone for its time. That film brought her national recognition and a President’s award presented by Indira Gandhi when she was serving as a government minister.

Throughout her career Jayanthi worked with many leading stars of the era, including Rajkumar, with whom she was paired in over 45 films, and other prominent actors such as Gemini Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran and Jaishankar. Her body of work also included a role in the Hindi film Teen Bahuraniyan (1968) and a later appearance in the English-language Netflix series Brown Nation (2016).

Her contributions to Kannada cinema were honored with the title Abhinaya Sharadhe, a reference to the goddess Sharada, recognizing her expressive acting and impact on the industry.

Personal life

Off screen, she married actor-director Peketi Sivaram, who was described as an important source of support in her life and career. The couple had a son, Krishna Kumar. Actress Anu Prabhakar is married into the family and is reported to maintain a good relationship with Jayanthi.
