Early life and background

Jhulan Nishit Goswami was born on 25 November 1982 in Chakdaha, Nadia district, West Bengal. Raised in that town, she developed an early interest in sport: football was an initial passion and watching the 1992 Cricket World Cup on television helped spark her desire to pursue cricket. Her parents are Nisith and Jharna Goswami.

Physical presence and playing style

Goswami is a tall, right-arm medium-fast bowler and a right-handed batter. Standing around 1.80 m (5'11") and listed near 70 kg, her high-arm action and ability to generate pace made her a standout in domestic cricket and paved the way to international selection. Over her career she was noted for economy and consistency, and at times was regarded among the fastest women bowlers in the world.

Career

Jhulan made her international debut for India at the start of 2002. Her first One Day International appearance came on 6 January 2002 against England, and she played her first Test on 14 January 2002 versus the same opponent. She later added T20 internationals to her resume, debuting in that format on 5 August 2006 against England.

Across formats she compiled a long and productive international career. In Test cricket she appeared in 12 matches, taking 44 wickets at an average around 17.36 and scoring useful lower-order runs, including two half-centuries and a top score of 69. In the One Day International arena Goswami played 204 matches and claimed 255 wickets, delivering more than 10,000 balls with an economy in the mid-3s and a strike rate under 40. She also contributed with the bat in ODIs, finishing with over 1,200 runs and one fifty. In T20 internationals she featured in 68 matches, taking 56 wickets and registering a best bowling performance of 5 for 11.

Her bowling achievements include multiple five-wicket hauls in Tests and ODIs, a ten-wicket match haul in Tests, and record-setting T20I figures of 5 for 11 (as recorded by January 2017). By May 2017 she had become the leading wicket-taker in Women’s One Day International cricket, crossing the 200-wicket mark in international matches. In September 2018 she reached the milestone of 300 international wickets.

Goswami represented domestic teams including Bengal Women and East Zone Women, and appeared for composite teams such as Asia Women XI and India Green Women. She wore jersey number 25 for India and at times served India off the field as a bowling consultant.

Honours and recognition

Her performances earned major individual honours: she was named the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in 2007 and received the Arjuna Award in 2010. In 2012 she was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s civilian honours.

Later career and retirement

Jhulan’s last Test appearance came in late September to early October 2021 against Australia. She announced plans in August 2022 to retire from international cricket following India’s England series that September, and her final ODI was played at Lord’s on 24 September 2022. She had previously retired from women’s T20 international cricket in August 2018.
