Early life and background

Arpan Kumar Chandel, who performs under the stage names King and King Rocco, was born on 10 October 1998 in Uttar Pradesh. He grew up listening to both international pop groups and Indian rappers, and by the time he reached class eight he decided to pursue rap as a career. His family background includes his parents, Ashok and Rani Chandel, and a brother named Amit Kumar Chandel. He attended Navyug Senior Secondary School in Delhi and later enrolled at Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi, though he did not complete his Bachelor of Arts degree.

As a youth he played football competitively, but shifted his focus to music during his teenage years. Determined to improve his craft, he traveled long distances to access recording equipment and booked short studio slots to record multiple songs in one take. While still building his music career he worked part-time at the New Delhi Municipal Council, using earnings to buy instruments and production software.

Career

King began sharing his music online early, launching a YouTube channel titled King Rocco in 2012. He released his debut YouTube video, "Boombass," in 2015, and followed with a full music album, Circumstances, in 2018. That album included tracks such as "She Know," "Red Dirt State," "The Division," and "Clearly By Now."

He continued to release projects over the next few years, issuing two albums in 2020 — The Carnival, which featured songs like "Dracula," "90s," "Mafiia," "Let The Eyes Talk," "IICONIC," and "Tu Aake Dekhle," and Heartbreak, Made Me Do It. In 2021 he released The Gorilla Bounce, which included tracks such as "Casanova," "Main Bas Kehti Nahi," "Era," and "Tera Hua Na Mai Kabhi." His song "Father Saab" reached the top of a global artists ranking site in 2021.

King expanded into television when he auditioned for the reality rap competition MTV Hustle in 2019. Performing the song "Mai Khoya Rahu" in his audition, he advanced to the show’s Top 15 and ultimately finished among the Top 5 contestants. He also contributed as a playback singer to the Hindi film Drishyam 2, performing the song "Sahi Galat" in 2022.
