Early life and background

Logan Verjus van Beek was born on 7 September 1990 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He grew up in Christchurch, attended Saint Andrews College and later completed a Bachelor of Commerce and Management at the University of Canterbury. He comes from a sporting family: his maternal grandfather Sammy Guillen played Test cricket for the West Indies and later for Canterbury in New Zealand.

Van Beek holds a Dutch passport through his paternal family and has represented both New Zealand at youth levels and the Netherlands at senior international level. In his youth he also played high-level basketball and represented New Zealand at the FIBA Under-19 World Championship as a point guard.

Career

A right-handed batter and right-arm medium-fast bowler, van Beek began his domestic first-class career with Canterbury where he played from 2010 until 2018. He moved to Wellington ahead of the 2018–19 season and has represented Wellington in New Zealand domestic cricket. In 2019 he played county cricket for Derbyshire.

Van Beek has combined playing with coaching and other cricket-related roles. He worked as a cricket coach at Canterbury Cricket from 2011 to 2016 and earned a Level 1 coaching certification in January 2013. He has also been involved in social media and content roles for the Canterbury Kings, and has undertaken short-term roles outside cricket including work in people and culture and marketing support.

Internationally, van Beek qualified to play for the Netherlands in 2012 after meeting ICC eligibility rules and went on to make his Twenty20 International debut on 17 March 2014. He made his One Day International debut for the Netherlands on 19 May 2021 against Scotland. He was selected in Dutch squads for major tournaments, including the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, and was part of the Netherlands' squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B tournament in Zimbabwe.

Van Beek has developed a reputation as a genuine all-round contributor across formats. By 2023 his first-class record included over 1,500 runs and 160 wickets, with one century and several fifties. In limited-overs international cricket he had taken multiple wickets for the Netherlands in both ODI and T20I formats.

Notable performances

Van Beek produced several standout moments for club and country. He recorded a first-class century in October 2015 during the Plunket Shield and achieved his first 10-wicket match haul in the 2017–18 Plunket Shield season. In March 2018 he took a hat-trick for Wellington against Canterbury and finished as Wellington's leading wicket-taker in the 2017–18 Plunket Shield with 40 dismissals in seven matches.

A career-defining performance came in June 2023 at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier against the West Indies. In a dramatic match that went to a super over, van Beek scored 30 runs in the super over and also took two wickets in that phase, setting a new international record for the most runs by a batsman in a super over. He was named Player of the Match for his contributions in that game.
