Early life and background

Maithili Thakur was born on 25 July 2000 in Benipatti, a town in the Madhubani district of Bihar, India. Raised in a musical household, her father Ramesh Thakur worked as a music teacher and is credited by Maithili as a major influence on her development as a singer. Her mother, Bharti Ramesh Thakur, was a homemaker. She has two younger brothers, Rishav and Ayachi Thakur.

Her early schooling included a period of home-schooling until fifth grade because the nearest school was far from home. She later attended Bal Bhavan International School in Delhi. Maithili completed her education up to the 12th grade.

Career

Maithili trained in classical music and developed a public profile through music reality shows and independent releases. In 2011 she auditioned for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs but did not make it through; subsequent attempts at reality-show auditions resulted in several rejections even after reaching late stages of selection. Despite those setbacks, she continued to pursue performance opportunities.

In 2016 Maithili released the album Ya Rabb with collaborator Tannishtha Puri, marking her debut in recorded music. The following year she appeared on the live singing reality show Rising Star on Colors TV, where her performances attracted attention and praise.

Beyond television, Maithili built an online audience through a self-titled YouTube channel where she shares music and performances. She is known for playing the harmonium in addition to singing, and credits her father for much of her musical grounding.

Public profile

Maithili’s public image is rooted in classical training and a steady, grassroots rise through auditions, recordings and televised performances. She is often referred to by the nickname Tannu. Physically, she is described as approximately 158 cm (5'2") tall, with dark brown eyes and black hair. Her personal preferences include a fondness for the actress Alia Bhatt and favorite foods such as chole bhature, pani puri and South Indian dishes. She lists pink as a favorite color.

She follows Hinduism and identifies as Indian by nationality. Her zodiac sign is Leo. Music remains central to her life—she enjoys singing and playing harmonium, and attributes much of her success to her family, particularly her father.

Politics and recent developments

In 2025 reports emerged linking Maithili to political activity in Bihar ahead of state elections. Meetings with Bharatiya Janata Party leaders generated speculation about a possible electoral candidacy from Benipatti in Madhubani.

On 14 October 2025 she formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party subsequently gave her a ticket to contest from the Alinagar Assembly constituency, marking a public shift from a music-focused profile to active political participation.
